Night of the Arts
This year’s night of the arts will be on Wednesday, April 25 at the SILC building. Students in the Choir, orchestra, strings, art, and SMARTE classes will have a chance to demonstrate some of the skills that they have learned over the year and show off some of their class projects. The night starts off with a short performance from the high school musical Oliver. Parents will then be put into several groups and toured around the building while students from each class show them some of the skills they had learned in the class. The orchestra and strings class will be playing music for the parents as they walk by, choir will be singing for them, SMARTE will be showing some of the projects that they worked on, and on the second floor the art class will be displaying some of their artwork along the walls. This is a great opportunity for any of the students to show their parents how hard they have worked in these classes and will be a fun experience for everyone else.
Oliver!
Manitou Springs High School is putting on their annual

based on the novel by Charles Dickens. Oliver! is filled with a
plethora of fun songs and dance numbers. Some elementary and
middle schoolers are also featured in the musical numbers, so

sold to a mortician, he meets a group of young criminals run by
Fagin, the brains of a pickpocket operation in London. From rich

8th Grade Fun!
Eighth graders are hopefully looking forward to summer, and getting ready for
high school, but the fun isn't over yet! As we are nearing the end of the year, there are a
lot of events approaching that the soon-to-be freshman can get excited for!
To begin, the trip to Skate City and Springs Trampoline Park is coming soon on
May 18th. The office will be sending information out soon, so be sure to sign up! If you
don't sign up, don't come to school, because eight grade classes will not be going on.
May 23rd has a lot going on! Not only is it the last day of school for us, but we
also have eighth grade promotion from 6 to 7. There will be an email sent out for us to
vote on our two colors. The winning colors will be used to decorate the gym, so
choose wisely! When the day comes, make sure to dress formally. Right after the
promotion, there is an eighth grade only dance that will last until 8:30. Then, we will
conclude the night with a pool party down at the Manitou Pool that will end at 12. Don't
forget your bathing suit!

MSMS Lunches
School lunches all over the world vary based on culture and budget. Unfortunately School
lunches are known all over the place for being very unhealthy and not tasting very good at the
same time. Even though over the years school lunches
and food in general (especially in the US) have gotten a
lot better over the years, school lunches seem to still
maintain their crummy reputation. Here at Manitou we
have (in my opinion) a very healthy and tasteful lunch
menu. We have lots of options that are all very filling
and not deep fried or full of fat. Our salad bar changes
almost everyday with more fresh veggies and fruits.
Hopefully over the years school lunches get better and
their
reputation also improves A LOT.

knows as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He will be known for his many contributions to cosmology, especially in black
holes. Hawking is also known for his famous book, “A Brief History of Time:
From the Big Bang to Black Holes”.

Fitness Day
Fitness day is this Friday for the entire school day. It will replace our usual classes with a day of fun athletic activities. Activities will include skiing, spelunking, bowling, hiking, and much more. Fitness day has been much looked forward to by all the grades. It is widely regarded as the best school day of the year.
One of the most popular options for fitness Day was going to trampoline word. 130 students throughout the school signed up fo this activity; that is more than one third of the school! So many people are going that they had to break apart the trampoline people into two groups, each going to two different places.
In comparison, all the other activities have very few people going. Ski cooper, which was by far the most popular trip before they introduced trampoline world, only has about 30 people going, much less than usual. All in all, fitness day is a much looked forward to day that all love, even if some activities are better than others.

What to do Over Spring Break
Spring break is right around the corner. No school, no stress, no problems at all for a whole
week! Many people over spring break plan huge, extravagant trips to fun vacation destinations such
as Hawaii or California. While these kinds of trips sound like fun, not everyone can go on them. So
what are you supposed to do if you can’t go exploring the world for your vacation this year? Here’s
a few ideas to alleviate boredom over break:
Binge watch a movie series or TV show
We’ve all sat around in our houses for days at a time binge watching a show or having a movie
marathon at some point. Without any homework or responsibilities over spring break, you can do
this without any consequences! I would suggest Stranger Things, The Office, and Arrested
Development which can all be found on Netflix. Of course, if you’ve already seen these shows, try
exploring Netflix and clicking something random, you might end up loving it!
Visit Cave of the Winds
When you think of spring break, you probably think of relaxing on a warm beach or swimming
in a pool in 70 degree weather, but if you’re staying in Colorado, you really never know what the
weather will be like. No matter what the weather is like
though, the Cave of the Winds is the perfect place to visit
with your family over vacation. Touring the caves is great
to escape the heat (or cold knowing Colorado weather)
since it’s always at a temperature of 54 degrees. Don’t
worry if exploring a cave doesn’t seem like fun, there are
lots of other things to do there. Such as play around on the
high ropes course that reaches over William’s Canyon, zip
line across the canyon on the Bat-a-pult, or even ride the
Terror-dactyl that drops you 200 feet into William’s Canyon
and lets you swing for a while while they bring you back up.
Go to the Royal Gorge
While it may be an hour long trip, it’s worth it. The Royal Gorge is not just any canyon, it is
1,250 feet of jaw-dropping beauty. If you’re bored by the gorge’s
beauty alone, there are many other things to do there. Maybe try
walking across the Royal Gorge on the bridge or get across on
the gondola. For more daring people, you can try the sky coaster
where you are strapped in and flown out over the gorge. Or
maybe try the zip line that goes across the entire gorge. If you’re
not the daring type, there is a maze and a park on the other side
of the gorge as well as a restaurant if you get hungry. No matter
who you are, the Royal Gorge is an amazing experience.
Play Some games at the Arcade
If you’re looking for something a little closer to Manitou, try walking down to the Manitou
arcade to play some old-school video games. The arcade is within walking distance for most
Manitou residences and it doesn’t take long to drive there from Colorado Springs or any other
neighboring cities. The arcade is a fun idea for any families who are spending an evening on
Manitou Avenue. Maybe try some spring water from one of the local springs on your way to the
arcade. Invite a friend to hang out with while you’re there, or just go alone! Either way, it will be a
great time.
Spring break is almost here and there are a lot of people without plans. Whether you decide to
binge watch a show, visit one of the Pikes Peak Region’s many attractions, or do something else
with your vacation, make the best of it.

Manitou School Walk Out
Wednesday, March 14th Manitou Springs Middle School students performed
an exemplementry example of a peaceful protest in the late morning
hours. Multiple students of all three grades marched as a unit to the
Manitou Springs City Hall as 606 Manitou Avenue. There, the multiple
students gathered inside the open foyer and met with City Council
Member Jay Rohrer to ask questions about city and school safety
pertaining to gun violence.
“If current policies stay the way they are, there will be more school
shootings. What is City Council currently doing to keep Manitou
students safe?”
“One idea from government is to arm 20% of teachers. Does city council
feel that this is a viable option for Manitou School District? Would
students have a say in whether their classes are taught by armed
teachers?”
“Although most students are unable to vote, what can students so in
school and in the community to have their voices heard? How can
students become more active in city government?”
“Law enforcement encourages all residents that, ‘if you see something,
say something.’ What processes and policies are in place to handle
reported events appropriately?”
“Manitou Springs strives to be inclusive to all, but there is always
more that can be done. How does City Council support this goal?”
All these questions were answered by both Mr. Rohrer and the MSPD
Chief. All people involved did a fantastic job of giving and answering
questions to both parties. MSMS had all form of equantenses ranging
from 6th graders and grandparents. We as a school are proud of our
students exercising our First Amendment Right.

World Culture Night
World Culture Night is an event at school where anyone is welcome. You spend the
evening learning about different cultures. You can learn about different foods, religions, and
lifestyles.
Mrs. Huntington’s world language class is serving crepes. Crepes are pancake-like
treats that originated in France. They can be served with filling in the middle that vary from
savory sausage to sweet sugar.
In addition, Mrs. Wilson’s choir class is singing a song in Swahili called “Kenya
Melodies.” The song starts with the whole choir singing together then it breaks off into solo
groups. The piece is truly beautiful and unique!
These are just a few examples of the activities at world culture night, it will be crazy, but
full of fun.

Manitou Wrestling
Welcome to Manitou Spring Middle School Newspaper. I will be talking about the Manitou wrestling. Their are 18 wrestlers and four of them are girls. Their are three coaches with the team this year, their names are Todd Nagle, Paul Bonnor, Striker Lane. Todd Nagle has been coaching for five years, Paul Bonner has been coaching for seven years, and Striker Lane has been coaching for two years. The season is going great stated a few of the wrestlers.
Going Into High School, From An 8th Grader
The school year has just raced by, already bringing us into quarter four. In little more
than two months, school will be over, releasing us to three months of freedom, before we all
move up a grade. 6th graders will become 7th graders, and 7th graders will become 8th
graders, and look back to the incoming 6th graders to marvel at how small they are and
confidently remark about how they were never that tiny. 8th graders, however, will make the
stressful quest to high school, their summer before school only marred by the upcoming threat
of hours of homework, a new, maze-like building, and a sea of intimidating teenagers.
“[I’m most excited to] choose my electives,” says Mary Kilpela, an eighth grader at
Manitou. High school has a bunch of awesome electives to offer, such as technical theatre, jazz
band, journalism, and student counsel. Some 8th graders are excited for high school, already
looking forward to the countless opportunities it has to offer. However, there are some things
that people aren’t so excited about. Mary, for example, is most nervous for “homework, because
homework is stressful, and also grades.”
A few of our more outgoing students already have high hopes for themselves. A new
development in high school in grade point average. Grade point average, or GPA is the overall
average of one’s grades. For example, if someone were to get straight A’s, they could sustain a
4.0 GPA. GPA is important because colleges look at them, and the higher GPA you have, the
better your chances of getting into a good college are. Some, who are already fixed on a certain
college, are determined to maintain a 4.0 or higher GPA. This is a large point of stress for
people, simply the idea of maintaining straight A’s even in middle school seems impossible, let
alone with the added stress of sports, more homework, and adjusting to a new environment.

High School Cheer
Manitou Cheerleading has been going around the eighth graders so that, they get ready when there going to be a freshman. So
on there try outs, in (summer) there going to be teaching them how to do moves. Like front flips, back flips, round offs. Mrs. Wilson,
the cheerleader teacher said, ” if you can’t do any thing that has to do with cheering or gymnastics, we will teach you”. The training
is going to be in summer, before tryouts so you know what your getting ready for when you go to try out in summer. Make sure,
before tryouts that you try to stretch a lot because it’s needed in cheer. So then they will know your ready for cheering and
stretching well for other moves. Although there’s other places you can practice at for tryouts, you can practice with Mrs. Wilson for
tryouts. So as a freshman cheer leader, if you make the team and go to practice with all the cheerleaders, it’s going to be at high
school.
Although, there is training in 2018 summer before tryouts to get ready and so you’ll actually have a chance for making the tryouts.
If you make the cheerleading team in fall for August if you decide to cheer for football, you’ll have to go to every single football
game. You will need to also remember all the cheer moves. Witch will be easy as long as your working over it 5/7 days a week.
There are some other people I know who you can talk to about it. Like, Adele and Morgan. Although in fall cheerleading for football,
it’s more competitive but, there s also going to be tryouts in January 2019 through February, won’t be about competition. It will be
more about having fun, and our team winning. If you need any more information please email, [email protected]

Fitness Day: Behind the Scenes
Fitness day this year was a blast! There were so many fun things to choose from, and we have Mr. Lutz, Ms. Burnell, and Ms. Thomson to thank for that. The first thing Mr. Lutz did was go through a list of activities that he thought students would enjoy participating in. He then called each place to make sure they were okay with bringing large groups of kids to the place for a while. Once he made the list of activities, he went online to create a google form. This online survey was sent out to every student in the school, so that they could choose their top three choices. Scheduling buses was also a part of the job, making sure the buses go to the right place at the right time. We give our thanks to these three people for planning out a fun day for all of us!
Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump to meet face to
face!
On Thursday, the leader of the Hermit Kingdom, Kim Jong Un, sent out an
invitation to meet with Donald Trump after he had met with a South Korean delegation.
Trump accepted the invitation. The meeting is to talk about North Korean
denuclearization.
We have been witnessing a radical change in the iron-fisted leader of North
Korea. First, he decides to unite the North and South Korean teams under one banner,
and then he wants to talk about denuclearization? The man has been working on
nuclear weapons for so long and he just got a working bomb, and now he wants to
denuclearize? i don't know what happened to Kim, but it is for the better.

High School Schedule Change
Just the idea of high school is terrifying and exiting. From elementary to middle things have
changed from teachers to lessons, but going into high school just about everything is different.
All of the grades have lunch together, as in Middle there are separate lunch times. Some students
are driving and able to leave campus at certain times during the day unlike middle school. The
lessons get a lot more complex and unlike in middle school there is actually homework. Even the
classes. There are more options from athletic conditioning to student council and
honors classes. It would be hard for the middle school to have so many options
because of how long the few classes we have are. One of the largest changes is
going to be the schedule. Instead of 4 classes the high school students have 8
classes. This is definitely a huge difference and it will definitely take some time to
adjust. So good luck all eighth (future ninth) graders getting into the flow of high
school which is the next possibly the biggest step in a educational career.

school which is the next possibly the biggest step in a educational career.

Mints Are Back!
Hello fellow mustangs! This article brings great
news. Mints are back! For the past few years
mints have been a regular for people that go to
the office to get them, but sadly they have been
banned because of the lack of nutrition they bear.
Star light mints have unhealthy items in them and
this could bring your body bad bearings. We
have a solution! Go organic mints! Go organic
mints are healthy organic mints. The best part is
that they have several different flavors! Such as,
mango, pomegranate, honey, and of course have
a minty after twist. So if you have a sore throat
come on down to the office and get a tasty mint!
Also when you get a mint you need to pay a
quarter.

Winter Play by Eryn Hilyard
About a month ago, students from grades 6-8 went up to the SILC building after
school and auditioned to be in the middle school play, Is There A Doctor in The House?
Around forty students auditioned and only twenty seven were called back the second
day. Then the third day is when the cast and their parts are posted on the wall by the
front desk in the middle school. There was about twenty three parts in the play, and the
directors/stage managers took a very long time choosing parts.
Now, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and some Saturday’s. Their practices
run from 3:30 to 5:30 pm and on Saturday they start from 9:30 to 11:30 in the morning.
As you can tell, the cast members and directors are working very hard to make this
production for audiences of all ages to see.
The script is very funny and full of one-liners. The cast is doing a great job with
their parts and are making it happen!

Matchwits News About Competing by Macy L.
Matchwits is a club that quizzes members to prepare for competition. Like Knowledge Bowl, teams compete against each other by trying to answer the question fastest. “A” Team, who has competed twice for the year, has ranked first place both times. A low score for a match would be 4 points, but they have averaged 15 points per round! “B” Team, who started off at 7th place at the first competition has already moved up to 3rd! They are doing a super awesome job for this being their first time in Matchwits. The first competition they had four rounds, the first being a written round. The other three were verbal. For the second competition they only had the three verbal ones to contend in. There are a total of four competitions and the next one will be in February! Watch out for it!

Veteran Interview... by Ella B.
Mac Connelly sits in the View Pointe Retirement Center dining room with Jadyn, Ashley, and I. After a few minutes of conversation, we learn that he was a B17 bomber pilot in WW2. Mac was born in Trinidad, Colorado, in 1922. He grew up during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. “There would be these columns of dust”, says Mac of the Dust Bowl. “The dirt would get into the house all the time.” As for the Depression, Mac tells us that there would be a shortage of shoes, and they would have to go barefoot to school. Sometimes, Mac says, he would steal milk bottles and sell them so that his family would have a few cans of beans to eat. As our conversation turns to his military experience, Mac tells us that he wanted to be a fighter pilot when he was a kid. “I used to play like I was shooting down the Germans”, he says. For him, getting into an airplane and flying it was natural. “I liked it.” he says. The aviation cadets stayed in tents. “It was tough.” says Mac. According to him, the age requirement to get into the military went down as the country headed towards war. “At first it was 21, then they needed more pilots and it dropped to 18. You would need two years of college, then one, and then you just took a lot of tests to get in.” Mac says liars and thieves were not tolerated in the Air Force, and cadets could be kicked out for doing so. Also, people would fail tests in the Air Force, and would not be allowed in. Mac says that the fail rate back when he was a cadet was about 30 percent. Even so, Mac was “born to fly”.
But there was a dark side to the Air Force, says Mac. “There would be an occasional crash, and you didn’t want to see that.” Mac also tells us that people would get lost on the field, and would starve to death before anyone found them. Mac says that being in the military with someone bonds you.
As for growing older, “it’s a lot more painful now.”, Mac says, showing me the knots on his hands. “But I learned an important lesson in the Air Force- go after things with full determination. That is the main thing in life.”

Robotics
Have you heard about robotics? I asked Ms. Marquardt, a 4th Grade Teacher at Manitou and a robotics coach, a few questions about this year’s robotics program.
What, in a general sense, is robotics? Robotics is about learning to program a ED3 Robot to complete missions using sensors and other attachments. These missions are made of LEGOs. Robotics is also about teamwork and team building skills. The missions are real world problems that require logic skills. There are interpersonal interactions between teams.
How many participants did we have this year? For all of our middle school teams, we had 42 participants. For our team for Elementary, Middle, and High School, we had 86 participants.
Who can register for robotics?Anyone can register. Grades K-3 have spring seasons. Grades 4-8 have fall seasons. Grades 7-12 have an all year season for First Technical Challenge.
How can you register for robotics? For grades 6 and up, robotics is an activity. To sign up next year, you need to go to the front office, or the athletics department in the high school. You need to fill out an activity form, and there is a 60 dollar fee.
What about next year? The new theme will be released this August. There will be a sort of secondary introduction to robotics. We will also have some seasoned competitive teams. Meetings start around August 15. Practices will begin after the start of school. Qualifiers go into November.
This year, we had several LEGO Robotics teams participate in regional competitions. This year’s theme was HydroDynamics. Teams created projects with innovative solutions to conserve water and make it cleaner. Through this process, students learned important team building skills, including communication and cooperation. Team names this year included Royal Flushes, Water Bots, Potable Pollution, and Drip Drip Drop. Team Drip Drip Drop made it into state competition, and we are so proud of them. Their state competition is on December 16. Go Manitou!

Be sure to check out the website at arts14ind14.weebly.com. To get more information, I interviewed Mrs. Barbarick, who organizes Arts 14 along with Ms. Navaratne.
What, in a broad perspective, is Arts 14?
Arts 14 is an umbrella organization created to oversee all arts programs.
Who are the instructors for the classes?
There are 22 instructors for 47 classes. About half of these instructors are teachers from District 14. This session, we have 266 enrollees.
When and by whom was Arts 14 founded?
Mr. Longfield, the superintendent, founded Arts 14 three years ago. It was his dream. Before that, there were several programs involving the arts, but it was never put together into one organization.
Who should students and parents contact for more information?
You can contact Arts 14 at [email protected], or you can email me at [email protected], or Ms. Navaratne at [email protected]. This year, our classes are usually nine week sessions. Registration for the second session of classes will start in January.

by Mat H.
The dance is at the end of the week on Friday. This will mark the end of the first quarter. Dress to terrify, and make sure to bring money for the five dollar entry fee. Something to remember: people from outside of the middle school can't attend this scarefest. Be there or be scared! See you there.

Football
by Grayer
This week for sports I'm going to be going over Manitou Football. So far they are three and zero, with a blowout every game. This week they are facing Peyton at there field, lets root them on! So far the offense has been killing it with over ten touchdowns in the air and around three on the ground. As for the defense they have had two interceptions, only one touchdown scored on them and all round just stop after stop.
Soccer
by Ethan
Soccer has played two games so far, an away game at Atlas Prep where they took an unfortunate loss 4-0 on August 30th, and taking the win on August 6th against James Irwin 4-2 at Maestes Field. The goals were scored by Max with 1 goal, Sean with 1 goal on a Penalty Kick, and Evan scoring 2 of the goals. Great job boys! There next game will be today starting at 4, the game will be held at Richardson Field (Our Home Field). Go out there and cheer the boys on, good luck soccer team!
Voleyball
by Davis
Hi my name is Davis Mack and our volleyball program is doing super good this season so far. They have beat CSS in 2 sets, also Peyton in 2 seats, also CSCA by a lot, and finally beat RMCA; that was a close game. So that makes our volleyball program undefeated so far this season. Their next game will be home against Monument Academy on Monday at 5:00. Monument Academy is undefeated so it will be a close match. Come and support them on Monday!

Spy School Review
By: Mia
On Friday, February 24th, the entire middle school attended the Spy School Play. Jane Doe [Mia S.] started out living in a home with two sexist parents, Tom [Anton A.] and Sally [Lilly D.]. Two CIA agents [Kenzie C. and Sophia H.] took Jane to see Agent K [Devon B.]. Jane is sent to a school to find an undercover Russian spy. She was given a 'family' of under cover agents, Natasha [Abigail K.], Fizz [Asher E.], and Joey [Peter B.]. Jane runs into bullies Priscilla, Debbie, Lucy [Lanna S., Araceli R., and Kirianna M.] and sexist views at the school. This play was executed very well and had professional actors. Although most of the actors in this are middle schoolers, they performed professionally. Small mistakes happened, like many do in any play, but the cast dealt with them well. The music cut out, everyone sang. Someone stumbled on their line, the play continued. Many people in the audience were expecting a play that looked sloppy, but the play was amazing. Each scene had different pieces to help represent the setting. Jane is an aspiring character, a strong female leader, and a feminist. Several funny moments were included, that were sure to give everyone a laugh. Overall a great play, I'm sure everyone hopes to see more of the middle school plays.
Student Lounge Gets a Facelift
By: Abigail
Plan Manitou is a group of students who are helping in our community. Currently they are making the lounge more enjoyable for students. They are planning on painting the walls in a creative and fun way and putting more tables in. One Plan Manitou group is working on getting trophy cases for in the lounge so trophies can go down there and more will fit by the gym. The lounge will still be used for its former purposes, but will have a new look. The students in Plan Manitou are planning on involving other students with helping them improve the lounge, but right now they are planning the project out. Their main goal right now is to get the lounge changes approved and start acting on the project.

Builders Club
By: Abigail
Builder's Club is an organization for students who want to help in the community and learn leadership skills. On February 14th, our MSMS Builder's Club hosted a luncheon for the senior citizens. The Builder's Club provided the seniors with lunch and a game of bingo with prizes. The seniors enjoyed this event because it helps them meet new people and makes them feel like they are still a part of the community. The Builder's Club has put out jars for spare change to raise money for leukemia research. Leukemia is blood cancer and prevents your body from fighting infection. So dig in your pockets and under your couch to donate spare change for a cause.
