Should State Testing be Optional?
State testing is a part of every child’s life, whether they like it or not. Once or twice a year, we
dedicate a day to surveying our learning progress through the year. Though these days are
widely dreaded, I believe they are important.
Some states have made state testing optional, giving kids the ability to opt out, and relieve
themselves of having to sit through a day of paper worksheets and #2 pencils. Colorado,
however, is not one of those states. Though our testing scores are significantly worse than
states in which testing is optional, they are more accurate, and give us a better idea of where
we are at, knowledge-wise, in our country.
States where testing is optional have dramatically better scores on tests. Not because children
are smarter, or work better out of their own free will, but simply because only the children who
know they will do well will take the test, mostly because they are aiming to get into a good
college.
State testing is incredibly useful when recognizing how someone is doing in their education-
where they need improvement, and where they excel. It can be incredibly frustrating for kids
who are ahead of their classes, yet they aren’t receiving any further education. Likewise, if
someone is struggling, it is important for teachers to know, so they can provide the student with
the help they need. Also, testing is useful when determining someone’s growth over the year,
not just to students, but also to teachers. They can see how they need to improve their teaching
strategies, and what topics they need to focus more on.
Colleges tend to look at SAT scores when determining whether to accept someone or not, so if
someone wants to get into a college of their choice, it’s useful to have scored well on SATs.
Tests like those can be incredibly stressful, and regardless of how smart someone is, simply the
stress of the test can cause their scores to go down. I believe that it’s important to get as much
practice as possible, and luckily, we are provided with tests like PSATs.
Testing should be required in every state; not only does it help children get the learning
opportunities that they need, but it can help get them into good colleges or jobs. Even though it
can be painful, state testing is a good thing, and everyone should partake in it.

By Gwen Porter
President Donald trump spoke to the governors of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee on Sunday. Trump has been speaking regularly to Florida governor rick Scott and senator Marco Rubio, and has offered every resource there is of the federal government to aid in the after effects of hurricane Irma. Hurricane Irma has really effected the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and caused massive power outages and heavy damage, but search and rescue operations have to wait until hurricane Jose plays out until they can save anyone in need.
Trump with democrats?!
By Lance Warner
President Trump siding with democrats?! Donald Trump has gotten more and more mad at McConnell and Ryan for failing to pass barely anything since he was elected. Because of that he started to talk Schumer and Pelosi. He is more of a independent president than anything at the moment. The Republican leaders pushed a year and a half debt ceiling extension. Trump just took the Democrats’ three-month deal related to the massive hurricane that is about to hit Florida.

Americas Past Time

Is baseball Americas past time ? Baseball has been around since the 1800s. It was one
of the first professional sports played in the United States of America. During World War
II, there was even a woman's baseball league. It was both for men and women. Now in
the 20th century Americans are calling American Football Americas past time. That is
unfair because baseball needs to go back to being called Americas past time. It was the
first professional sports Americans played, its more world spread, and fans are more
involved. First, baseball is Americas oldest sport. Kids, men, and women all played the
sport and they still do. Second, it's way more world spread than American football.
American Football is only played in America. Baseball is spread throughout the globe.
Every four years the World Baseball Classic is played. That's where countries send their
best players to compete and play baseball games. Without baseball being Americas
past time it would have not spread throughout the rest of the world. Last, fans are more
involved with baseball than any other American sport. Fans cheer for one of their 30
favorite baseball teams throughout the whole spring. If their teams get eliminated then
they might cheer for a new team to win the World Series. But when the World Baseball
Classic comes around, some people cheer for their favorite players, playing for their
country, or some people cheer for their country. Baseball has fans more involved than
any other sport. Baseball is and will always be Americas past time, because it was the
pastime in the first place, it's more world spread, and the fans are way more involved

Saving Trees
By: Lanna
Did you know that 2,500 acres of rain forests are being destroyed almost every
hour? According to debate.org. Trees get cut down for many reasons however, cutting
down trees only hurts our environment. We need trees in order to have a healthy
lifestyle. We also need to encourage people to stop cutting down as much trees as their
cutting now. Humans should stop cutting down trees or find another way to produce
products. Also to find another way to build buildings all without harming a lot of trees.
Trees get cut down because of logging, and people making furniture and charcoal.
Timber companies cut trees and sell them. Oil companies to cut trees to make oils like
palm oil. Trees are cut because of mining as well, they cut trees to make space I go the
rain forest so they can dig for what ever is worthy. Along with mining people cut trees
around dams so that trees won't fall over in the wind. Which I get but, they could at least
in some way used those trees for something else after cutting them.
The ecosystem needs trees as well. Trees help with things like providing habitats
and food for animals. Not only do they create shelter and food they also absorb carbon
dioxide that is harmful to us if be breath to much. One crazy thing is that one single tree
can supply oxygen to four people. If we keep cutting down many acres of trees we could
loose oxygen and we would be breathing carbon dioxide.
How to help stop cutting down trees is to think about what is made from trees a and
reuse it or recycle. Following that create things out of trash that you can reuse. Another
good way is to borrow, share, and donate books. Most importantly, plant trees to start
repopulating the trees. Visit forest and realize how beautiful they are. Stay on trails
when out on a hike. The one you should look out for is that you should think what you
bring on a hike or even a camping trip and see if anything could start any fires.
Yes trees can and are reusable but, when you kill acres and acres of trees then it
will start to become a problem to our environment. Overall trees do so much for us and
some people don't realize that and they go off and just trash and destroy it. So if we
could somehow stop or help this situation we could have more trees.

Animals are suffering
By: Delaney
Many Zoos are holding animals in confinement. After being healed, zoos are keeping animals from their natural habitat away from their family. Animals in zoos are not enjoying an living their life unlike the rest of their family.
Animals are getting the wrong idea of their habitat and what their life really. After animals are healed, they should be released back to their natural habitat, but animal keepers continue to confine them. Because they are keeping them in zoos, if they were ever to get released, they would not have the skill set and tools they need to protect themselves. The animals are kept in small spaces without any animals to spend time with. Day by day, animals are loosing their skills to hunt and kill as they once learned as a baby. People don't understand that they are destroying all the animals life just for people entertainment.
Animals are getting the wrong idea of what their life is. Animals are controlled, manipulated, they have NO choice in what or when they eat, and they are forced to share a space(sometimes) with other animals. They have no choice in anything, and everything is controlled for them. They are in fake habitats, and after a few years they think it's their "home." The habitats don't come close to resembling their natural habitats like the desert, jungle, or any other habitat.
Many people could argue that zoos are fun and entertaining, and it's "Just a few animals." But in reality, animals are suffering just for your entertainment.

Is Graffiti Art or Vandalism?
The Art Behind the Paint on the Wall
By: Abby
Since its introduction onto city walls and subway cars in the 1970s, the increasing popularity of graffiti as an art form has won over artists and a regular presence in pop culture and the whole art world. So, when walking down the street and seeing graffiti would you judge it as art or vandalism?
Graffiti writers have been roaming all over the world bombing, tagging, and painting their way into society's consciousness expressing a hidden social or political message. While others say that graffiti writers are more concerned with communicating with each other. Sometimes a piece of graffiti is written in a clear script, with a clear message and in such cases we can infer that the writer is addressing the wider audience of the public. However, the custom of graffiti “tagging” is directed by a different set of concerns. Although lots of graffiti have messages and meaning, others are just creative pieces of artwork the artist paint.
Many people say that graffiti isn't art,
but what's to say it isn't? Graffiti is a way for artist to express the opinion or emotions on a subject. The definition of art is "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power." Isn't graffiti an expression of human creative skill? Yes, yes it is! In visual form it is just a different form of painting. Now, a lot I graffiti is beauty but, graffiti can be vandalism.
There are so many beautiful forms of graffiti from words to portraits and much more but, some is vandalism. Graffiti of inappropriate words, drawings, and graffiti painted in "illegal" spaces is intolerable. It is still art but is vandalism. Really it's just the way you look at it.
All in all, art can not be defined as just one thing, but is a variety of techniques and abilities. Sure it can be inappropriate but, graffiti is
for sure a form of art.

Sea World Trauma

Every minute two million plastics bags are used across the world. Plastic bags are ruining
our environment and killing off animals and we need to change before our planet suffocates
from plastic.
Plastic bags are toxic to our oceans. People use plastic bags from stores and for everyday
use, but don't recycle them after instead they throw them away. Little do people know, it takes
thousands of years to decompose a plastic bag. The bags are blowing into the oceans and
suffocation animals. The animals then get stuck and debris and muck collects around them to
where they cannot unravel themselves from the bags. Last year, roughly 100,000 sea creatures
died from being tangled in these plastic toxins. If we started using plastic bags, our ocean
population wouldn't plummet. Animals wouldn't get tangled inside plastic bags if we used paper
bags.
There is enough plastic bags to go around the world 4,200 times. These bags might seem
harmless but it pollutes rivers and lakes, takes away the beautiful presence of nature and the
cleanliness of highways. If we used paper bags nature would be more preserved and highways
wouldn't be so dirty. Paper bags decompose easily and they don't harm the environment. So
recycle your plastic bags and use paper bags instead.

Stolen Childhood
By: Abigail
Our childhoods are being taken from us. The moment you are born everyone conjectures
what you'll become. They imagine what you'll be like and form their own ideas for what you
should be. Your parents lean you toward what they want for you and expect you to speculate
your future. Everyone asks about your dreams but doesn't focus as much on the thoughts at
hand. Children shouldn't be forced to make big decisions early on.
Children haven't been exposed to real options yet. They only know the simple and basic
things. When asked what they want to be when they grow up they say something they know,
like a firefighter or a doctor. Now these careers are still a option but if the parents hold them
accountable to it it is very possible that the child will change their mind and let someone down.
As a child we see small things in books and movies about these jobs but they are never entirely
revealed . We don't see the full vision of the careers until they grow up.
As a child you shouldn't be forced into making decisions. Just in that, youth can be swayed
easily by their peers, parents, and other people in their lives. Young people are pressured by
society to become great. They are forced to figure things out too early. People ask them
questions that they don't know much about and expect them to know the answer. Children will
willingly change their minds to please people. Generally, they haven't found their place and what
they will stand for.
The media puts unideal standards on youth. Children are getting phones earlier on than
before. With these devices comes media. They see celebrities and feel pressured to fit these
standards. They see news about everywhere which can be too much to process. While some
may argue children have more of a childhood than any time in history. In the past youth had
acquired adult responsibilities earlier. This could have been a result of absense of parents or
that they didn't have as long of lifespans, but we have evolved. In the 90s kids played outside
more and didn't have the pressures of the media. As we change so does the world around us.
Children are being put into situations in which they must make adult-like desisions. Childhood is
not a good time for too much pressure. While kids should have responsibilities they should also
savor the youth they still have.
We can't stop development, but we can alter it. Kids should be kids. Let them soak up their
youth, give them responsibilities, but allow them the childhood the deserve.

The Use of Animals in the Circus
By: Jesse
Have you ever been to a circus, if you haven't, you should. Circuses are fun to watch. Circuses have animals do small activities. The audience may think it is fun, but the it is not fun to the animals. Circuses are fun but the animals in the circus are being abused. Even though the circus can be fun, they should be banned.
First, they are domesticated young. The circus animals don't get to experience life outside of the circus. They also don't get to live outside of the cages much. The animals will never get to be free as long as the circus continues their acts.
Second, they are poorly trained. The animals are beaten while getting trained. They are whipped. They are put on electric prods to do the tricks. They have food deprivation. Which means they get starved. The prods electrocute The animals until they do the tricks.
Last, they are in isolation. They are chained. They are caged. They do not have enough space to live healthy. Are animals more important than circus tradition.

Reputation for shark is a scam
By: Mia
What do you think when you hear the word, "shark"? When most people think of sharks,
they think of man-eaters and fictionalized images of a monster from a movie called,
Jaws. Several people and animals are given bad reputations due from one incident or to
others' representations of them. Viewers of 'Jaws' and other shark attack movies such
as 'The Shallows' have an image of colossal savages looking to kill. Although shark
attacks have occurred, giving sharks such a bad reputation is unjust.
Sharks do not hunt for human. A shark's diet mostly consists of fish, marine mammals,
and crustaceans. When shark encounters do happen, it's mostly because of mistaken
identity of its natural prey. In movies the film producers give the supposedly 'murderous'
sharks unbelievable speeds, but in reality sharks swim with a whopping maximum
speed of 31 mph.
Your risk of being attacked is 1 in 3,700,000. Compare this to the statistics of dying in a
car accident, 1 in 84. The odds of dying from dog, 1 in 112,400, a lightning strike, 1 in
161,856. Many people have nightmares of sharks, when in reality the odds are
remarkably low.
A shark's main predator is actually humans. An estimated 90% of large sharks have
been deceitfully put out of existence. Over 50 shark species are listed on the
endangered species list. 87% of the causes for these statistics is for shark fin soup.
Hong Kong is the main handler for 'finning' sharks. While shark fin soup merely uses the
2-5% of the shark, the rest is wasted. Every hour more than 10,000 sharks are killed.
Given this information can be a start for your fictional image of a shark to be erased. We
have a lot more to be scared of than sharks, so keep calm and swim on.

2-5% of the shark, the rest is wasted. Every hour more than 10,000 sharks are killed.
Given this information can be a start for your fictional image of a shark to be erased. We
have a lot more to be scared of than sharks, so keep calm and swim on.
Do Kids Get Enough Exercise?
By: Brady
74% of kids in the US don't get enough exercise time. Only about 45 minutes out of the
recommended 2 hours is provided in schools on average nationwide. In some schools, 45
minutes is only provided every other day. This means that only 2 hours and 15 minutes per
week out of the needed 14. Some people would say that kids could just work out by themselves,
but schools don't know some children's time situations every day. They may not have two hours
every day by themselves, therefor, schools need to provide at least an hour and a half every
day.
This year, almost three quarters of kids in the US didn't get enough exercise.
They are recommended two hours per day. Some of these kids, however, only got three
hours in a week! That's only about twenty minutes per day. Only 16% of kids get the
recommended workout time to stay fit.
If only 1/4 of children get enough time to exercise. Even in working out by themselves.

When Do We Become Adults
By: Meg
When do we Become Adults?
When do we actually become adults? Some people think we become adults younger than 18, some people think the legal age is appropriate, and some people think the age should be older than it is. The legal age should be 16 or 17, because we can drive when we're 16, and 17 is just a year younger than 18,18 is the legal age of actually being an adult in the state of Colorado. The legal 'adult' age should be 16 is because us teens can get a job, drive, and do many other things when we turn 16. It's ridiculous that the adult age is 18 when we can do many things when we're 16 but we're not referred as 'adults' where still referred to as 'teens'.
Some teens act more mature than people older than them, and that is another reason why we should be regarded as adults when we are either 16 or 17. Some kids brains mature faster than others and the ones that mature faster usually still get called 'kids' just because they're younger than other people, but they act more mature than them.
Teen age is 13-17, child age is 1-12 and adult age is 18-how long you live, most teens can act very mature and understand what they are doing or what they need to do. There are these things called timetables, timetables is how much you mature over the years and if 16 year olds did a test to see how much they matured over the years then they should see how much they've matured and refer to them as adults or very close to adults, by now by some of the teens being called a kid is an insult.
Insults some 'kids' either mature very fast because of family problems or other problems, others don't mature until they hit middle school, because they are 'babied'.
Adults now say let kids act like they do, but some of us act like 2nd graders instead of actually acting our age, which is actually really annoying. Others act a lot more mature than our actual age, which could also be bad. Besides 'acting like your age' someone could probably easily get job and act like any other 16 year old, but we would be younger. That's the reason why were considered 'kids' as of right now. I'm writing this to tell adults and people my age that we should actually have more 'rights/privileges' when we enter high school instead of waiting even more years than we've waited to get more respect from other people.
In conclusion it would be better if people actually treated us older than little kids. This might offend adults, but they need to know, people get tired of getting treated as a little kid, like they can't do anything without messing something up. They can, some people grew up faster than others and we should get more privileges, that is if it is earned. So to end it in conclusion we should have more privileges and be able to do more things then what are given to us.

P.E. and Health Opinion Piece
By: Jesse
In our Manitou Middle School, we used to have a PE class. In 8th grade, they added a Health class to our school. The first semester had a PE class and a Health class separated. In the second semester, they changed that. Now health and the PE classes are put together. Instead of having two classes, there is only one. Now you don't get to have PE a whole class worth. It is still a fun class, but we don't get as much PE time. For about half of the class we have PE class and the other half of the class we have Health class.
Manitou School Lunch
By: Brady
As a school that is health oriented, I think Manitou Springs School District should only sell and provide organic or all natural food and snack products. A school district that is healthy should only be providing students healthy food items. For example, no chips, cookies, sodas, or sugary/greasy products should be given to students. The district should also make a great effort to encourage students to bring healthy items for snacks and lunch.

Manitou News: New Incline Regulations?
By: Heidi
Recently, the Manitou Incline rules and regulations have changed. People used to be able to park at Barr Trail parking lot, pay per hour and hike the incline. But now, you have to have a reservation to park there and pay twenty dollars a day. The incline is a very popular attraction in Manitou and unfortunately more people won't be coming because of the new rules. More Manitou locals want a quieter area, and more room to park, so that's why new rules are in order. Free parking is offered down by the park, and you can ride the free shuttle up to the Incline. |
Journey
By: Meg
I'm here to talk about my opinion on the game Journey. Game club, held on Fridays in Mrs. Spengler's, played a game called Journey. I didn't start the game but I ended it. I really enjoyed this game, it was fun, calming and one of the best games I've played, it is definitely in the top 5. I don't think many people know about Journey, and I think they should because you have to really think about what you are doing. There is no shooting or killing, but adventure. You can explore everywhere to collect ribbons that make your scarf longer, your scarf is a little like your life. Overall, it's a really fun game to play, it might not be the normal 'Shoot 'em Up' game. You really just have to use your head, but that is the fun of it. I think that many people would enjoy this game.
