Softball
Softball is a variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. It was invented in 1887 in Chicago , Illinois, United States as an indoor game. It was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground, softball, kitten ball, and because it was also played by women, ladies' baseball. The name softball was given to the game in 1926, because the ball is soft.

On April 10- 2018 is when softball is starting. A lot of people are going to try outs. Talk to the front office if you need more info about it. I love softball because I’ve been doing it most of my life and it’s a friendly sport that I think if you wanna take a chance in doing a different sport, go for softball or base ball.

As the boys winter sports are ending, they ended with a great season! “A” team boys left their regular season 12 and 2 with their both losses against the Peyton Panthers. “B” team boys finished their season UNDEFEATED! Great job boys. Our Manitou Mustang boys went to playoffs which took place last week Wednesday. After their big win against CSCS our biggest rivals they traveled to Peyton to take a win but ended up coming short by three. They came home with a 2nd place plaque.
Now that the boys season is over, girls tryouts start December 11th, 12th, and 13th is invitation ONLY! If you’re interested in basketball or would like to try it for a year make sure to drop in and show the coaches what you’ve got.

A Track Story by Adele G.
Have you ever thought about an easy sport that does not require time or place to do so? Well I've got the sport for you! Running! Running is a fun sport and better for your health than other contact sports. Speaking from my running research and experience, I would say the same. With the research I've conducted I've noticed that several people have said on the internet that there lives are extremely impacted my just lacing up there shoes and going for a run. She is an inspiration to all women that I've recently met is Melisa Archibald. This women went
through a life changing experience that effected her life forever. One morning Melisa went on a run and she seemed out of breath. She sat down and that's the last thing she could remember. Melisa went through what we would call a heart attack. And a man was thankfully behind Melisa on the run and knew CPR. “He saved my life.” Melisa said after she was released from the hospital. When Melisa arrived at the hospital she went through many hours of work to keep her alive. Melisa was in a coma for a few months to preserve her heart and keep her alive. Melisa’s heart stopped for moments before her life was given to her. Melisa was relieved and thankful that she lived. Even though she had to rest and went to weekly checkups for a while. She decided that when you are given a second chance at life you need to live it. Although Melisa was already a runner before her tragedy, she did it again and it helped her recover. So if you had a second chance at life would you take advantage or use it to your advantage? So get out there and run!

Colin Kaepernick’s attorney issued a statement Thursday on Kaepernick’s behalf in response to recent NFL tweets from President Donald Trump. The statement, from Kaepernick’s attorney Mark Geragos, quoted John F. Kennedy. As John aptly noted almost 60 years ago, a president should be a moral leader in the crusade for human rights, and he must expert the great moral and educational force of his office. . .to support the right of every American to stand up for his rights, even if an occasion, he must sit down for them.
Kaepernick, who imitated the kneeling protest during the national anthem last season to draw attention to racial inequality and police brutality, remains a free agent. He filed a grievance against NFL on Sunday, alleging that owners have colluded to keep him out of the league. 13 NFL players, 11 owners and commissioner Roger Goodall were among those at a meeting in New York this week to discuss social justice issues. Kaepernick was not invited to the meeting.

NFL Injuries
by Grayer W.
Some of the reserved players in the NFL are injured and out this year. One important person who is out is Charles Clay, who plays for the Buffalo Bills. He is currently out for the season. Another player who is on injured reserve is Greg Olsen for the Carolina Panthers, who is also detrimental to their team. One amazing player of the week is, sadly, Aaron Rodgers for the Green Bay Packers. He had gotten out during last week’s game, from a tackle on a sack. There are many other players on injured reserve or out for the season, but these are just a few of the major roles to some of these amazing teams.

NBA Trades
By: Grayer
There have been many reports and rumors of where NBA players will be going. One of the most interesting trades was Dwayne Wade, he had played for The Miami Heat ever since 2003 and as of recently is now playing for the Cavaliers. He has said one reason he traded was to be with his friend LeBron James who he also played with on Miami. The last surprising trade and rumor is that Carmelo Anthony will be trading to the Thunder, now this is just a rumor, however he is already taking team pictures which means he probably will be heading over soon. Again there is no official report or how much his contact is but we will see this week. That's all for NBA trades but there can always be surprise trade so keep your eyes peeled.

NFL Draft
By: Ty
Two weekends ago was the National Football League's draft. The 2017 draft was full of many surprising picks and trades. Some teams did very well drafting while some wish they could rewind time and draft all over again. The weekend was filled with many fans watching and hoping their favorite team would draft a prospect to push them over the top, and make them Super Bowl contenders. While everyone was watching the draft this weekend sports analyst were keeping track on how good teams were drafting. The stat sheet came out and to no ones surprise, the grades for each team was released. There were five deserving teams who all got A's on draft night. Those five teams are the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, and the Cincinnati Bengals. There were many teams who's draft grade ranged from C's to B's, which shows most everyone did okay during the draft. Most everyone had a good night except the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears, who both got D's as their draft grade. Both made silly mistakes and did not have a good draft night. The NFL season isn't for a while so it will give fans time to watch their new additions from the draft. Best luck to all the prospects, and best of luck to every team during the season.
Crushing The Competition
By: Heidi
On Monday, May 1st the Manitou Springs High School track team competed in the El Paso County Small School State Championships. The boys scored a total of 112 points and won. The meet was held at the Grace Center. The end of the meet was high stress and tension because Manitou and Peyton were tied with points. Since the Manitou track team is very strong and has members like Kuel who won states last year for the 800 and was part of the record setting 1600 relay team. Hunter Thomas helped bring up the points for a victory with throwing a high discus score and Kuel who then again carried the relay team. The Mustangs won by 1.5 points, beat the Panthers and are extremely happy. For Manitou, this is a big deal considering the size of this small town. Congratulations Mustangs!
NFL Draft; 2017
By: Jesse
The NFL draft was hosted on Thursday night April 27, and Saturday April 29. The Cleveland Browns had the first pick for the draft and they selected Myles Garrett, 6' 4", 270 pounds, who played for Texas A&M. He was a defensive end. Another big player to the NFL was Christian Mccaffrey. He played for Stanford University. Stanford made it to a bowl game but Christian Mccaffrey didn't play that game because he didn't want to get hurt before NFL draft. Now he plays for the Carolina Panthers. You also can't forget about our home team, the Denver Broncos. Their first pick was a man named Garett Bolles. He used to play for Utah. He is also a defensive tackle. One of their last picks were Chad Kelly. He played for Ole Miss. Chad Kelly is a quarterback. This is a short story about some star players for the NFL and our Denver Broncos NFL draft. Make sure to watch some football this year.
NBA Playoffs
By: Nathan
Round 1 of the NBA playoffs have come to a close. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict the outcomes. The highest seed from each game advanced with the exception of the Jazz vs. Clippers series. The Jazz will take on the #1 seed Golden State Warriors. The #2 seed San Antonio Spurs will take on James Harden and his record setting season. In the east Boston will clash with John Wall and the Washington Wizards. While Cleveland in the final matchup will take on the 3 seed Toronto Raptors. Hopefully we can expect some more upsets in the second round, but at this rate it's looking like once again the Cleveland Cavaliers will emerge from the east, and the Golden State Warriors will emerge from the west. You can expect for the 3rd year in a row one of the greatest developing rivalries, to have a final tie breaker championship series.
